Kel had received a call from Holly, letting him know that Ringo had completed the tasks that Chas had requested, so he swung by Hamburger Hamlet on his way to the investigation agency and picked up some food for the perpetually hungry hacker.

“Oh,” Holly bit her lip and stared at the bag that Kel had in his hand.

“I know,” he nodded. “I wouldn’t touch this stuff either, but I figured that it’d be right up his alley,” Kel grinned, inclining his head toward the hall.

“Actually, his former roommate works there, so he never gets food from them because he suspects that the roommate might try to poison him,” Holly whispered, eyeing the bag like it was a ticking time bomb.

“Oh, for the love of…” Kel sighed, more than a bit annoyed.

“Hey, you’ve met him,” Holly pointed out. “I’m thinking it’s probably a valid fear.”

“You make a good point,” Kel agreed, handing her the bag. “Could you dispose of this for me, please? I don’t want to offend him.”

“Sure,” Holly nodded, taking the grease-stained bag with two fingers and dropping it into her waste-basket. “He knows the smell, so I’ll have to take it out to the dumpster, but hang on, I always keep something in reserve, just in case someone needs something,” she opened a file drawer and reached in, pulling out a box of donuts. “I just take them to the homeless shelter on days that he doesn’t come in or doesn’t need to be…encouraged,” she smiled, handing Kel the box.

“I owe you, my dear,” Kel gratefully accepted the donuts.

“Don’t mention it,” Holly chuckled. “I couldn’t let you go in there unarmed.”

The Odor of the Day in Ringo’s lair was pepperoni and mildewed sneakers, partially mitigated by a heavy dose of lemon air freshener. Kel’s plan was to be in and out as quickly as possible.

“Hey, my man, whatcha got there?” Ringo eyed the donut box hopefully.

“Just a small token for a job well done,” Kel forced a smile, setting the box on top of an array of crumpled chip bags and burger wrappers. “Where are the documents?”

“Where are the documents?” Ringo snickered. “You sound like you’re in a spy movie or something. Chill out, man. Cop a squat and have a morning snack with me. It is morning, right?” Ringo frowned.

“Yes, it is, and thank you for your kind invitation, but I’m afraid that I have previous engagements, so if you could point me toward the information packet that Chas requested, I’ll just be on my way.”

“Dude, you have a butler at home, don’t you?” Ringo stuffed half of a glazed donut into his mouth and grinned around it.

Kel had to look away, and spotted a manila folder, with a sprinkling of crumbs on top of it.

“No, I don’t. Is that the information?” he pointed to the folder.

Ringo chewed with his mouth open and nodded.

“Yep, that’s the stuff. Pulled up a few juicy little tidbits,” the words were mushy.

“Oh?” Kel was intrigued.

“Yeah, one of the dudes that I looked into has a rap sheet a mile long.
